How sad. He was a brilliant actor, I know that.
I remember that he said something like that when he was preparing to be a guest on the Muppet Show. They wanted him to do a segment where he chatted with Kermit the Frog as Peter Sellars and he said the man didn't exist! He insisted on doing characters the entire show.
