TV Tuesday: Loretta Young Makes an Entrance

Though I've never seen The Loretta Young Show (also known as Letter to Loretta), I have often heard of her legendary dramatic entrances at the start of each episode. She would open the door to a cozy room, and briskly step in, with a flip of her skirt, to give her introduction. That entrance became so closely associated with Young that when an illness kept her away from the program for several months, though other stars filled in for her, that door remained shut until she was there to open it again. Here's a silent montage of a few of those entrances. She had quite the selection of dresses!

This used to be my mom's favorite TV show. Before I was even in school, I'd help her fold clothes while we watched the show. I don't remember any of the individual shows (except vague memories of one with Dane Clark as a doctor and Loretta Young in an iron lung), but I sure remember the opening...my mom couldn't wait to see what sort of dress she's be wearing. LOL

That's so funny how Loreta's dresses overshadowed all that work she did for the show. Though I can imagine that she wouldn't find it so funny. I think it's all about the way she made that entrance though. Barbara Stanwyck would wear a fancy new gown for the intro. of each of her shows as well, but no one seems to remember that!

I've been enjoying watching the Barbara Stanwyck show on DVD, so now I'm inspired to give Loretta a try.
